Friday in “Al Doha Al Jadeedah”

Al Doha Al Jadeedah is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Qatar. The area used to be home to Qataris and has since become a densely populated home to migrant workers. Its hustle and bustle is brought to a halt by the Friday call to prayer. The echoing call emanating from the mosque ripples through the area and the alleyways. As I stroll in the narrow street, the sound of my footsteps is drowned by the chirping birds and the footsteps of the area’s inhabitants. We collectively make our way, by foot, to the mosque that is the node of the neighborhood.

The soundscape is a series of recordings made at the neighborhood. The user is able to move the cast aluminum which is attached to a joy stick that could move into 4 different positions. Once the aluminum is moved a recorded sound plays and with every movement the sounds overlap to create a soundscape of the Al Doha Al Jaddedah.
